How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Any Room
A rug grounds a room and ties the furniture together — but only if it's the right size. Too small, and it looks like a stamp floating on the floor. Use these simple rules per room.
Living room: get the front legs on
At minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug — this visually connects the seating group. Better still, fit all legs on the rug for a pulled-together, luxe look. An 8x10 suits most living rooms; go 9x12 for larger, open layouts.
Bedroom: frame the bed
You want soft rug underfoot when you step out of bed. Place a large rug (8x10 or 9x12) under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends 18–24 inches on the sides and foot. For smaller rooms, runners on each side of the bed also work.
Dining room: leave room to pull out chairs
The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add 48 inches to each dimension to find your minimum rug size.
When in doubt, size up
A rug that's slightly too big makes a room feel larger and more intentional; one that's too small makes everything feel cramped. If you're between sizes, choose the bigger one.

FAQ
Should all furniture legs be on the rug?
Ideally yes in a living room, but at minimum the front legs of the sofa and chairs should be on it. All-legs-on looks the most polished; front-legs-on is a budget-friendly compromise.
What size rug for a queen bed?
An 8x10 rug works well, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends about 18–24 inches on each side and at the foot.
