Where to Hang a Mirror (and Why)
Mirrors are the most powerful — and most misused — decorating tool. Placed well, a mirror doubles the light and makes a small room feel twice its size. Placed carelessly, it reflects clutter or an empty corner.
Reflect something worth seeing
Before you hang a mirror, notice what it will reflect. Opposite a window it bounces daylight deep into the room; across from art or a view it doubles the good stuff. Never aim it at clutter or a blank corner.
Get the height right
Center a mirror at eye level — roughly 57–60 inches from the floor to its center. Over a console or sofa, leave 4–8 inches between the furniture and the mirror's bottom edge.
Scale it to the wall
A mirror should fill about two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture beneath it. Too small and it looks like an afterthought; a large floor mirror leaned in a corner adds instant grandeur.
