How to Decorate a Dining Room

How to Decorate a Dining Room

A dining room does one job supremely well: it gathers people. Good decorating here is about comfort, flattering light and a table you actually want to sit at — not a formal set that only comes out twice a year.

Size the table to the room

Leave at least 36 inches (ideally 42–48) between the table edge and the walls or furniture so chairs pull out and people pass behind. A too-big table in a tight room kills the whole space.

Hang the light at the right height

A pendant or chandelier should sit 30–36 inches above the tabletop, and be about half to two-thirds the table's width. Put it on a dimmer for meals versus homework.

Ground it with a rug

Choose a rug large enough that chairs stay on it even when pulled out — usually 24+ inches beyond the table on all sides. It defines the zone and softens the acoustics.

Add warmth and a focal point

A sideboard for serving and storage, a large piece of art or a mirror, and a simple centerpiece turn a functional room into an inviting one. Keep the centerpiece low enough to see over.
