How to Arrange Living Room Furniture

How to Arrange Living Room Furniture

Where you put the furniture matters as much as what you buy. A well-arranged living room feels open and social; a poorly arranged one feels cramped no matter how nice the pieces are. Follow these principles.

Find the focal point first

Every room has one β€” a fireplace, a TV, a big window, or a piece of art. Orient your main seating toward it so the room has a clear anchor and everything else falls into place around it.

Pull furniture off the walls

The instinct is to push everything against the walls, but floating seating a few inches in makes a room feel more intentional and larger, and creates a cozier conversation area.

Create a conversation zone

Arrange sofas and chairs so people can talk without turning their heads β€” roughly a U or facing pairs, with no seat more than about 8 feet apart. Add a coffee table within easy reach of every seat.

Leave clear walkways

Keep 30–36 inches for main paths and about 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table. Good flow is invisible when it's right and obvious when it's wrong.

FAQ

Should a sofa go against the wall?

Not always. Floating it a few inches off the wall β€” or into the room to define a seating area β€” usually makes the space feel larger and more designed, as long as walkways stay clear.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

About 14 to 18 inches β€” close enough to reach easily, far enough to walk past comfortably.
